I am happy to present to you, my interview with Brian Kilmeade…

When someone asks you ‘what do you do for a living?’ – How do you respond?

I tell them that I am a broadcaster and a writer.

What are you reading at the moment?

When you think about your childhood, what book comes to mind?

The book that comes to mind is the first book given to me by my second grade teacher called Unsung Heroes.

Can you remember the first story you ever wrote?

The first story I ever wrote was for a 4th grade assignment.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a professional soccer player.

What do you think your school aged self would think of the present day you?

I had high expectations and big dreams and I think I would have to believe I am on the right track.

If you could wrap up a single book and gift it to yourself as you left education – which book would it be?

I would gift myself Coach: Lessons on the Game of Life by Michael Lewis. In a short book, you get to see a big story packed with a ton of messages: Lewis talked about being on the mound with the game on the line and the manager telling him he believes he could get out of this inning and he did. It showed him and the reader the power you can have in other people’s lives. It’s also showed later how the coach never changed but parents and society did. In later years the coach was ousted because parents said he was too tough.

Does your reading have routine? Is there a particular time or place that you like to read?

I read all day: I read books at night and always when I work out.

Which book has had the biggest impact on your career so far?

I would say the book that has had the biggest impact on my career is Unleash The Power Within by Anthony Robbins. This is a guy who dedicated his whole life to making people’s lives better and preached the concept of personal responsibility. He took Norman Vincent Peale into the 21st century. The book has been used as a great resource for me—I love the fact that he became rich doing it…part of capitalistic concepts.

What two pieces of advice would you give a young aspiring writer?

Write about what you care about and make sure there is a market for the finished product. Keep asking yourself “what am I creating that no one else has already created?”.

Do you have any books that you strongly associate with someone important in your life?

No, I can’t think of any books I associate with someone.

Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?

I definitely prefer non-fiction. There are too many facts to learn in life, too many biographies to read to waste my time in fictional worlds. Also, I do not like Star Trek or Star Wars—I’d rather see a great documentary!

Do you think reading is important?

YES. Incredibly important.

What’s the best book you’ve read in the last 6 months?

Do you prefer real books or digital books?

I prefer digital books.

Name a book that you feel every human should have to read by law.

I would recommend that every human reads The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. This book shows how much the proper mindset can make or break you in life—how to understand what success is and how to achieve it. Who can’t benefit from that?

What is the book that you feel has had the single biggest impact on your life?

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. People want happiness and success and wonder what the secret is, well this book unlocks the secret and can break generational working class struggles and in some cases, poverty.

Are there any books you haven’t mentioned that you feel would make your reading list?

What books or subject matter do you plan on reading in the next year?

I’d like to read more biographies and more books on the subject of history or sports.

If you were to write an autobiography – what would it be called?

Winning Gradually, Off the Bench.
