Colleen Hoover Books Ranked: 23 Books in a Tier List
Colleen Hoover has gone from self-publishing her first book in 2012 to being one of the best-selling authors in the world, with It Ends with Us and Verity selling millions of copies and It Ends with Us filmed in 2024. Her books are emotional, twisty and often about hard subjects, which means readers’ rankings vary a lot.
This tier list covers 23 of her novels and novellas. We’ve rated each book on its storytelling and how well it has held up, and noted the ones to approach with care. Many of her books deal with abuse, grief and trauma, and most include content notes; it’s worth reading them first.
SS tier: Essential
Verity (2018)
A struggling writer is hired to finish the bestselling series of an injured author, and finds a manuscript in her house that reads like a confession. Hoover's only full thriller is her most gripping book, with an ending readers still argue about.
It Ends with Us (2016)
Lily Bloom falls for a neurosurgeon, Ryle, while her first love, Atlas, reappears. The book that turned Hoover into a phenomenon, and a story about domestic abuse that Hoover has said draws on her mother's experience. Read the content notes first.
Reminders of Him (2022)
Kenna leaves prison after five years and tries to reconnect with the daughter she has never been allowed to meet. Her most mature book: a story about grief and forgiveness more than romance.
AA tier: Excellent
Ugly Love (2014)
Tate agrees to a no-strings arrangement with Miles, an airline pilot with rules. Told in alternating timelines, with Miles's past in verse-like chapters that deliver the book's real punch.
November 9 (2015)
Fallon and Ben meet on the same date every year. A clever structure and one of her best twists, even if the final reveal asks a lot of the reader.
All Your Perfects (2018)
A marriage strained by infertility, told through then-and-now chapters. Among her most honest portraits of a relationship, and quieter than the books around it.
Hopeless (2012)
Sky meets Dean Holder and starts to remember a past she didn't know she had. An early book that still has a devoted following; it deals with child abuse, so check the content notes.
Confess (2015)
Auburn walks into an art studio where the paintings are based on anonymous confessions. A romance with a mystery built in, and a good second book for new readers.
BB tier: Good
It Starts with Us (2022)
The sequel to It Ends with Us, from Atlas's point of view. Written for readers who wanted Lily and Atlas to get their story; gentler and less essential than the first book.
Regretting You (2019)
A mother and her teenage daughter are pushed apart by a family tragedy and a betrayal. A family drama told from both sides, with more warmth than most of her books.
Maybe Someday (2014)
Sydney starts writing lyrics for Ridge, the musician across the courtyard. Original songs were written for the book, and the love triangle is handled with more care than most.
Heart Bones (2020)
After her mother dies, Beyah spends a summer with the father she barely knows on a Texas peninsula. A summer romance that's sadder and better than it looks.
Slammed (2012)
Hoover's first book: Layken falls for Will, a slam poet who turns out to be her teacher. Earnest and dated in places, but the start of everything.
Too Late (2016)
A college student is trapped in a relationship with a dangerous drug dealer. Written as a side project and first shared online; the darkest book here and not for everyone.
CC tier: Mixed
Without Merit (2017)
Merit lives with her chaotic family in a converted church. Ambitious in its treatment of depression, but crowded with plot.
Layla (2020)
A couple stay at the bed and breakfast where they met, and Layla starts acting strangely. Hoover's ghost story has a premise that splits readers.
Never Never (2015)
Co-written with Tarryn Fisher: two teenagers lose their memories and must work out who they were. A fun mystery that takes three parts to resolve.
Point of Retreat (2012)
The sequel to Slammed, following Layken and Will's relationship. For fans of the first book only.
Losing Hope (2013)
Hopeless retold from Holder's point of view. Adds context but repeats a lot.
This Girl (2013)
The Slammed story retold from Will's point of view, as he tells it to Layken. The most skippable of the trilogy.
DD tier: Skip
Maybe Not (2014)
A short spin-off novella about Ridge's roommate Warren. Light, crude fun, but slight.
Finding Cinderella (2013)
A short novella spun off from Hopeless. Sweet but thin.
Maybe Now (2018)
The follow-up to Maybe Someday, written for fans who wanted more. It adds little to the original.
