Eating a plant-based based diet has a wealth of benefits; both for your own personal health as well as for the environment as a whole. In 2017, demand for meat-free food increased by 987%; thus demonstrating that more and more people are exploring alternatives. People have a variety of reasons to pursue a vegan diet; ranging from the health benefits to helping reduce global warming to simply not agreeing with the cruelty endured by the animals. Luckily, due to the huge surge in people adopting this way of life; there are more and more options for people looking for meat and dairy alternatives. However, it can still be a challenge. My partner is a vegetarian but is interested in adopting a vegan diet. This is what spurred me to pursue a reading list of the best vegan cookbooks. In the past, we have purchased and gifted what we thought were the best vegan cookbooks on the market. But, as always, if you want the best of the best – you have to go to the source. I have assembled a panel of experts on the topic of vegetarian and vegan cooking, some of who have written some of the best vegan cookbooks themselves! Before we discover the best vegan cookbooks, we must first meet that panel…

Now, let’s discover some great vegan cookbooks.

eaternity

Eaternity by Jason Wrobel

Whitney Lauritsen:

This book is wonderful because it contains 150 easy and delicious vegan dishes that anyone will love. What makes it unique is that the recipes are grouped into unlikely categories such as Eat for Better Sex, Eat for Strong Bones, Eat for Great Skin and many more. I might be biased, but the Chestnut & Kabocha Squash Dip is my favorite (partially because I helped Jason develop it.) It’s a great fall dish that would be a perfect addition to your Thanksgiving meal!

the first mess cookbook

The First Mess Cookbook by Laura Wright

Emily Von Euw:

I love Laura’s food photography and the energy of her recipes; they’re always so wholesome and sexy at the same time. A fave recipe from the book is for quick no-bake salted peanut butter cookies! They’re so rich and delicious and the perfect sweet, nutty snack for any time of day. I change it up a little and use almond butter sometimes for an equally yummy treat; that adapted recipe is on my website.

chloe’s kitchen

Chloe’s Kitchen by Chloe Coscarelli

Sam Turnbull:

One of my favourite vegan chefs, Chloe’s recipes always turn out great. Chloe was the first chef to show me that being vegan didn’t have to mean only grain bowls and salads. My favourite are her pasta dishes, desserts, and anything tofu!

happy food

Happy Food: Fast, Fresh, Simple Vegan by Bettina Campolucci Bordi

Rakhee Yadav:

The premise of the ‘Happy Food’ is simple and appeals to me because it shows Bettina’s passion behind showcasing the best of vegan variety. I love her approach to no waste cooking with plant based dishes that are super easy to prepare and don’t hurt the wallet. ‘Happy Foods’ is a great book to own even if you are not vegan!

fuss-free vegan

Fuss-Free Vegan: 101 Everyday Comfort Food Favourites, Veganized by Sam Turnbull

Sam Turnbull:

Yep that’s me! I wrote the book I wish I had when I went vegan. It’s jam-packed full of easy recipes using ingredients you can find at your local grocery store. Everything from pancakes, soups, salads, sandwiches, cheeses, burgers, burritos, tacos, pasta, cakes, cookies, and pies. All your classic comfort foods made vegan and easy to make! Perfect for a new vegan, but even seasoned vegans love this book.

the greenhouse cookbook

The Greenhouse Cookbook by Emma Knight, Hana James, Deeva Green and Lee Reitelman

Emily Von Euw:

The vibrancy of fresh ingredients and colours in this collection is wonderful. The book reminds me of why I love eating simply in the first place. I have made the pumpkin pie with whipped coconut cream recipe half a dozen times, and in fact created my own inspired version for my blog, because it’s so amazing.

vegan bowl attack!

Vegan Bowl Attack**! by Jackie Sobon

Whitney Lauritsen:

I’m obsessed with this book! Jackie has a way of creating simple and comforting recipes that are enticing for non-vegans and vegans alike. The pictures are drool worthy and everything I have made is incredible. My favorite recipe in this book is the Smoky Tahini Sauce, which I’ve made many times, and it can be used to top many different meals.

vegan in 7

Vegan in 7 by Rita Serano

Rakhee Yadav:

It is easy to see why Rita Serano’s book, ‘Vegan in 7’ went on to becoming a bestseller. The talented Rita shows us in the book how easy it is to cook plant-based dishes with only 7 ingredients or less! Her recipes are super healthy recipes nourish your body and soul.

Emily Von Euw:

Quick vegan recipes with a few simple ingredients? Yes, please! I can be rather unorganized with my food prep sometimes, so recipes that are ready in a short amount of time and ask for under 10 ingredients can come in handy a lot. The zucchini frittata from this book is divine and I have made it several times, adapting it into my own recipe for my blog.

the wicked healthy cookbook

The Wicked Healthy Cookbook by Derek and Chad Sarno

Whitney Lauritsen:

The Sarno brothers are food magicians and they really knocked it out of the park with their first cookbook together! They focus a lot on making mushrooms “meat-like” and have a variety of unique techniques. My favorite recipe is the Spicy Coconut-Corn Crack which is a perfect winter dish. You can also make it less spicy if that’s your thing.

the homemade vegan pantry

The Homemade Vegan Pantry by Miyoko Schinner

Sam Turnbull:

If you’re interested in making your own staples, this is the book for you! Everything from homemade butter, broths, tofu, and vegan meats can be made from scratch and this book beautifully shows you how.
