When someone asks you ‘what do you do for a living?’ – How do you respond?
I am a sports and performance psychologist, also a clinical psychologist, so I help people – athletes, coaches, teams, organizations, business leaders – improve their performance through the way they think, behave, and rebound from their struggles.
What are you reading at the moment?
What’s your earliest memory of reading?
In elementary school, I would check out every sports biography book that I could find, and my goal was always to try and finish them before the end of the day so I could check out another one.
If you could encourage young people to read one book in particular, what would it be?
I would encourage young people to read whatever interests them – read to learn and grow, and through that process – wisdom is gained.
What is the worst job you’ve ever had?
In between semesters, while I was a baseball player in college, I worked for a civil engineering firm that was responsible for surveying pipe in swamps in south Louisiana. Most of the swamps were old chemical waste dumps. That was definitely the worst job I’ve ever had.
Do you read as much as you’d like to?
I read when I travel because when I am home, I like to be present with my family.
What books do you feel are important reading for people on your career path?
I would recommend people on my career path read lots of biographies of great leaders and successful people.
Is there a book that you’ve read more than once? What is it and why did you revisit it?
I can’t think of one off the top of my head, no.
What book have you recommended the most to friends and family?
Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell and Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand – both are about resiliency in the face of extreme challenge
What’s your favourite genre of book?
My favourite genre of book is historical biographies.
What do you think a world without books would be like?
Perhaps we would go back to wise community leaders sharing their stories and those being passed down but we would lack the true depth and reach of the stories.
Is there an author whose writing you’re such a fan of, that you’ll read everything they release?
I will always read anything by Malcolm Gladwell.
Do you think digital books will ever completely replace real books?
No, because there is nothing better than picking up a new book and thumbing through it.
What book do you feel humanity needs right now?
Any book that inspires people to learn how to live life, not be lived by life.
What is the book that you feel has had the single biggest impact on your life?
It’s hard to put it down to one book now that I think of it, but that doesn’t mean that books have not positively impacted me though.
Are there any books you haven’t mentioned that you feel would make your reading list?
I enjoy espionage thrillers – great books to read while traveling to disconnect and be engrossed with the thrills of the moment.
What books or subject matter do you plan on reading in the next year?
I want to start the Lee Child book series.
If you were to write an autobiography – what would it be called?
